Researcher Applicant Categories
AQHF offers three categories for researcher applicant eligibility. Categories were designed to support researcher training and mentorship opportunities to perpetuate the long-term development of professionals who advance the health and well-being of the American Quarter Horse.
Grants awarded with the Young Investigator Award designation support research in various areas of horse health with the ability to provide scholarly advancement for MS or PhD level graduate students, DVM/VMD level residency interns and Postdoctoral researchers in training. Research performed must be mentored by a graduate level advisor, major professor, or senior faculty PhD or DVM/VMD mentor. Graduate or residency students wishing to apply must be currently enrolled in a graduate sciences program.
Funding will support projects with focused scope and objectives in a specified field of equine research. Research should be completed within a one-year period with a viable outcome leading to publication following project completion.
The goal of the Young Investigator Award is to provide educational opportunities for researchers in training to perpetuate the long-term development of future professionals within the various fields of equine research.
Grants awarded with the Emerging Researcher Award designation provide support for the continued advancement of early career professionals. Researchers must work in collaboration with an experienced investigator who is willing to provide mentorship on research and career development. Collaborations may be performed across species, departments and/or institutions. Funding is limited to support researchers who have received less than $50,000 of equine-specific extramural or outside grant funding as a principal investigator.
Funding will support a stand-alone or pilot project with exceptionally focused scope and objectives in a specified field of equine research. Research should be completed within a one-year period with a viable outcome and/or endpoint. Researchers are expected to indicate how the obtained data will be used to further their research career.
The goal of the Emerging Researcher Award is to encourage and advance new faculty working to establish their research career within the various fields of equine research.
Established Investigator Award
Grants awarded with the Established Investigator Award designation support the work of investigators and teams with a previous record of completed research and publication generating scientific innovation and promoting research collaboration within the various fields of equine research.
Investigators must be willing to provide mentorship on research and career development opportunities to foster future colleagues. This collaboration may be performed across species, departments and/or institutions.
Funding will support stand-alone projects with exceptionally focused scope and objectives in the field of equine research. Research should be completed within a one-year period with a viable outcome and/or endpoint.
Research Expectations
With programmatic objectives to promote research findings and foster education, graduate student travel stipends will be awarded with the expectation that upon completion of the research, students have an abstract accepted and present their findings at scientific conference (i.e., AAEP Laminitis Symposium, Equine Science Society Symposium, Havemeyer Horse Genome Workshop, etc.) with appropriate acknowledgement of AQHF's support.
